Department Chair, IB History, and Government
I’m a graduate of Huntington University with a B.S. in Social Studies Secondary Education and minors in teaching theater, radio, television, and speech. In 2010, I received my M.Ed. from Indiana Wesleyan University. I started teaching high school in Chicago, and since then, I have taught grades 5-12 on three different continents. My wife and I started overseas teaching at Khartoum American School in Sudan, and we later moved to Russia where we taught at the Anglo American School of Moscow. In that time we’ve had the amazing opportunity to visit over 30 countries, and these experiences changed our outlook on the world. The mission of WIHI to approach learning from a truly international perspective inspires me, and I am so glad to be working at this school.
My wonderful wife and I were blessed with a beautiful son, born in the fall of 2012. I enjoy the outdoors and have recently started participating in activities with a “–thon” at the end, including a marathon and several triathlons.
Mr. Firman is a graduate of the University of Michigan Secondary MAC program and he has taught in a variety of contexts from college classrooms in Southeast Asia to outdoor education and adventure learning settings with middle school and high school students in the Alps and Pyrenees. Before moving to Michigan, he taught for two years as a Princeton in Asia fellow at Khon Kaen University in northeastern Thailand. Whether he is teaching Global Politics, yoga, leadership skills in the wilderness, or MYP personal project, what remains consistent is a deep commitment to student-centered learning and an unwavering belief that, given the right supports and challenges, all students can thrive.
Mr. Firman focuses on teaching practices that foster intellectual character and support students in their development as strong writers, readers, and critical thinkers.
Economics and American Studies Teacher
I am a life-long Michigander, growing up in the Metro-Detroit area. I have lived all over the state, earning degrees from Oakland University, Michigan State University, and the University of Michigan. I currently teach DP Economics, 10th Grade Economics, and 9th Grade World Studies. Along with Mr. Basler, I serve as faculty sponsor for the Yearbook Club, and I also sponsor the WIHI Business Club. I live in Canton with my girlfriend, Sara, our dog Phoebe, and our cat Bubastis. In my spare time I love sports, board games, video games, and reading. I am overjoyed to be working at WIHI with all the wonderful students here and I look forward to the years to come!
