THE ENRICHMENT PROGRAMProgram Overview
Enrichments are a vital and exciting part of the Washtenaw International High School experience. Students are exposed to new, intellectually challenging concepts and physical challenges delivered in a positive and supportive environment. Participants are encouraged to use this program as an opportunity to develop their personal interests, sample new experiences and challenge themselves outside their normal range of interests. The Enrichment Program offers a variety of educational experiences in the arts, culture, history, language, science, technology and domestic and international travel. Each enrichment course is twenty hours long and is taught by a qualified instructor. Graduation Requirement – Enrichments are a graduation requirement of Washtenaw International High School (WIHI). Students who attend WIHI for four years must complete two different enrichments, including one career mentorship. Requirements for transfer students are reduced in proportion to the time they spend at WIHI. Recommended Completion Schedule – Students are welcome to complete enrichments during the school year or over the summer. Please note that students must complete the Career Mentorship after successful completion of sophomore year. Students may use one enrichment credit in both eleventh and twelfth grade to earn enrichment credit and CAS hours simultaneously. Enrichment Credit – To earn enrichment class credit, students must actively participate, complete all work assigned, and meet attendance requirements. Upon conclusion of the program, students must submit an Enrichment Evaluation/Reflection. Reflective components vary from just the evaluations to performances and finished pieces of work. Enrichments must be completed during the school year in which they were taken. Attendance Policy – Students may only be absent for up to two hours of a class and must make up any work they missed. Students with multiple absences will not receive credit and no refund will be issued. Exceptions will be made for documented illness and family emergencies. Eligibility – Students may register for enrichments with the instructor holding the enrichment. Students may also register with the Enrichment Coordinator. Mentorships – Students may fulfill their mentorship requirement by completing a Career Mentorship. Career Mentorship packets are posted on our website and are available in the enrichment office. Students may begin their mentorship in the second semester of their sophomore year. Independent Enrichments – Students who participate in activities planned by outside organizations that also meet the requirements of an enrichment program can receive credit as an Independent Enrichment. Independent enrichments must total to 20 hours of direct instructional time. These programs must be approved at least 30 days in advance by the Enrichment Coordinator. Applications are available on our website. Self-Designed Enrichments – If students participate in a self-directed activity that challenges them beyond their normal daily routine and has a strong educational component, they may be able to receive credit for a Self-Designed enrichment. Self-designed enrichments must total to 20 hours of research time. These must be approved at least 30 days in advance by the Enrichment Coordinator. Applications are available on our website. Registration – To register for an enrichment program, students should please visit our Enrichment Coordinator in 8B after school (located across from room 803). The Enrichment Office is open from 2:45 pm - 3:30 pm. At this time, we only accept checks made out to WIHI. Domestic enrichments start at $65, though there may be materials fees added on per the instructor. Refund Policy – The most common problem students have with enrichments is conflicting schedules. It is important to note class dates in your calendar and notify us as soon as a conflict arises. You must withdraw three weeks prior to the start date of an enrichment class to be eligible for a refund. Refunds will also be issued in the following circumstances: a student withdraws from WIHI before the beginning of an enrichment; an enrichment is cancelled; a student is unable to attend due to a family emergency or illness (a full or partial refund will be given depending expenses already incurred for the program). Scholarship Program – Students may receive scholarship award each year to be used toward any enrichment program. The scholarship is awarded based on character, merit and family need. This process is confidential. Please email Ms. Persells for more information. The enrichment program is a school not an IB requirement and has been adapted from International Academy.
